Why we built howay.ai.
We're here for the bit teachers want help with most. Read on for the research, what we believe, and who we're built for.
Marking is one of the biggest drivers of teacher workload stress.
UCL Institute of Education research analysed 9,405 teachers across England, Australia, Alberta-Canada, New Zealand, and the United States, and concluded marking is one of the key drivers of work stress across English-speaking countries. A quarter of UK teachers work more than 59 hours a week, and 55 hours is the tipping point where quality of life starts to decline. OECD TALIS 2024 confirmed the same pattern at scale, surveying 280,000 teachers across 55 education systems.
howay.ai is designed to take that workload off the profession, and hand teachers back their evenings and weekends.
We mark, not plan.
Most AI tools for teachers help plan the lesson. howay.ai is built to mark the writing the lesson produces — against the teacher's own assignment, criteria, and curriculum framing.
We don't replace teaching. We give teachers their evenings and weekends back so they can keep doing it.
Built around the way students actually write.
Students still write by hand, in their books. The pen-to-paper part stays — that is part of how children learn to write. howay.ai picks up the moment the writing is done: the photograph, the marking, the personalised feedback, and the teacher's editable report. That's the bit teachers want help with. That's the bit we've built.
Built for teachers. Designed with students. Trusted by schools.
howay.ai is built for primary classroom teachers — the people who set the writing assignment, mark the work, and live the workload. Students experience howay.ai through their teacher: they write in their books, photograph their work, submit through the browser, and receive their personalised report and spelling test the moment they're done.
Schools and trusts will be able to roll howay.ai out across all teaching staff once schoolwide pricing launches. Until then, individual teachers can take Pro on a personal subscription and pilot the product in their own classroom.
